Net Worth Update – February 2016

Welcome to my monthly net worth post for February, 2016. Each month, I post a complete breakdown of my net worth, along with a chart showing the progression of my net worth since the start of this blog. Posting my net worth helps keep me accountable for what I do with my money, and motivates me to make better choices and push to reach new goals. You can see previous net worth updates here

If January is typically my “down” month, then February is my recovery month. The last two years I’ve not only managed to make up what I lost in January, but I’ve also made a nice gain. Partly due to my tax refund. But the market gain didn’t hurt either.

$2,085! I have to admit, I’m pretty excited about that. My tax refund was right around $1,800. But then, I spent almost $670 of that for the vacation Bryan and I are taking next week, so it wasn’t all the refund. I’m up $1,663 from where I ended 2015. Hopefully this is the momentum I need to get 2016 rolling in a positive direction.

I haven’t paid as much as I should have toward my car loan this month. I actually have $680 sitting in savings, specifically for that purpose. Why didn’t I make the payment? Uhm… Uhm… Honestly, I think I got worried, planning a vacation, about how much money we’d end up needing. It’s ridiculous, but I still get insecure when it comes to planning with my money. Especially when it comes to planning my spending.

You know what I like most looking at that chart? It’s been 3 years since I started this blog, and I’ve grown my net worth by $35,406! That may not seem like a lot to some. But to me? That’s been huge! And I’m so close to being debt free, I can taste it!

I’m hoping for big things this year. And I’m getting a great start!

  1. Congrats that is impressive and congrats on the 3 year anniversary. I wonder how much you would contribute your outcome to having the blog? I’m definitely more motivated now and feel more accountable.

    1. I would attribute a lot of it to this blog. Not only does it make me feel more accountable, but it also makes me keep track. I never tracked any of this before starting the blog. Now I look at my numbers throughout the month, making sure I’m still on track.

It also seems like the more debt I pay off, the more it pushes me to try harder. I guess it’s that whole “light at the end of the tunnel” thing. I can see an end, so I’m rushing towards it!

      1. That’s interesting, I’m hoping my blog will make me more accountable too.
I find the more audacious my goals are, the more motivated I am too!

        1. Having a blog definitely changes things. I also find that knowing my “why” helps a lot in motivation. It’s great to say you want to save $X, or payoff $Y debt. But knowing WHY you want to do that really pushes things to the next level. For me, it’s creating stability so I can get away from jobs I hate!

  2. Keep up the good work. It always feels good to watch those bars grow (and grow faster as they get bigger and start growing themselves).

    1. Thanks Tom! It definitely is a good feeling to see things moving in the right direction.
